The Battery Management System (the System) is a system that is designed to manage the performance of a collection of batteries, working on a 3-phase grid of either Wye or Delta configuration, and sourcing up to 2MW.

The system synthesizes appropriate AC voltages for either grid support or grid formation. It attempts to maintain nominal grid voltage, phase and frequency, and provides both regular and reactive power as needed. Additionally, it supports peak-shaving by recharging during periods of lower electricity pricing, as determined by communication with a utility operator. The system has a full complement of protections, redundancy, Online Fault Diagnosis (OFD) and Remaining Useful Life (RUF) prediction firmware and is intended to operate maintenance free for a period of at least five years.

System Architecture

  • Grid Controller

    A system will have one GC. Its function is to provide timing and control information to the BCs, based on information it receives from the utility operator; and to provide information to the utility operator on the system’s status. The GC also provides operating power to the BCs.

  • Battery Controllers:

    A system will contain between one and ten sets of three battery controllers. Each set of BCs are connected to one phase each of the grid. The BCs’ function is to provide timing and control information to its cells, while receiving from them status information; and to communicate this information to the GC while receiving timing and control information from the GC.

  • Cell Controllers

    Each cell will have an associated CC. Its function is to control the cell’s current flow, either attaching it in the battery’s current path or shunting that current around the cell; to measure and provide information on cell status to the BC; and to protect the cell from significant faults.

  • Cells

    The cells used in this system will be Lithium-ion. The system shall be able to operate with any of the following Lithium-ion chemistries (with appropriate changes in firmware): LiCoO2, Li2TiO3, LiFePO4, Li-NMC and LMO.
